1. Principle of sheet hydroforming and it advantages

【PRINCIPLE】In sheet hydroforming, pressurized fluid medium functions as punch or die, to manufacture
desired sheet components. This process is suitable for the forming of materials with poor formability at
roomtemperature, such as aluminum alloy, stainless steel and high strength steel.
【ADVANTAGES】Advantages of sheet hydroforming include: enhanced forming limit, uniform strain and
thickness distribution, higher precision and better qualification, decreased forming operations, and
reduced cost.

2. Construction and features of sheet hydroforming
press developed by HIT

【CONSTRUCTION】Sheet hydroforming press consists of two systems: double-action hydraulic press and hydroforming system. The hydroforming system includes four units, namely pressure intensifier, filling unit,
hydraulic unit and control system.

【FEATURES】
Hydraulic press and hydroforming system are more flexible due to integrated control system. Software and
hardware are independent, so the equipment can work as a general press and a special press with
hydroforming system.
Multi-axial pressure can be loaded. Forward, backward and radial pressure can be imposed dependently
or independently, to change the stress state and realize the forming of complex-shaped parts.
High precision can be achieved by close-loop control of pressure. Pressure, flow and synchronization of
pressure intensifier are controlled by closed-loop control. Drawing displacement, speed and blank holding
force are adjusted following the predesigned load curve.
Large liquid volume can satisfy the forming of large sheet components. Based on
synchronously-controlled pressure intensifiers, both the pressure and the volume (up to 5 m3 ) of liquid
can be controlled, which makes it possible for manufacturing of large sheet components.
Water medium is pollution-free. In sheet hydroforming, water medium is used, which makes the part clean
and no additional cleaning is required for storage, shipment and heat treatment.

4. Main achievements

Some sheet hydroforming presses (from 2000 kN to 13000 kN) have been developed and used for
manufacturing parts in the field of aerospace. The formed parts include battery shell, complex-shaped sheet
component etc. The materials include low-carbon steel, stainless steel, 2A12 aluminum alloy, 5A06
aluminum alloy, 2219 aluminum alloy, Incol718 superalloy. The largest sheet hydroforming press is in
developing at present (press capacity 150000 kN, liquid volum 5 m3).
