Hot Gas Forming Press

1. Principle of hot gas forming(HGF) and its advantages

【PRINCIPLE】 In Hot Gas Forming, tubular blank is placed in the preheated tool first. When the desired
forming temperature is achieved, dies close and tube seals. Then the tubular blank will be pressurized by
compressed gas, and material is fed if needed. Final shapes and dimensions will be calibrated with very high
gas pressure. This process is also called Hot Metal Gas Forming, which is an ideal manufacturing technique for
lightweight materials with poor formability under room temper, such as Al alloy and Mg alloy, etc.

【ADVANTAGES】The high forming temperatures allow the metal to elongate, or stretch, to much greater
degrees without rupture than in cold and warm forming methods. In addition, the metal can be formed into finer
details and requires less overall forming force than traditional methods. Main advantages include:

Enhanced formability at heated condition;
No springback, and high dimensional precision;
Sections with complex shapes are possible;
Gas media is clean and environment-friendly.

 

2. Construction and features of hot gas forming press developed by HIT

【CONSTRUCTION】 HGF press is mainly composed by the clamping press and the hot gas forming system. The clamping press is similar to that of tube hydroforming press. The hot gas forming system includes:  (a)gas-pressurizing unit; (b)high-pressure gas tank; (c)numerical control unit; (d) hydraulic system;  (e)cylinder for sealing; (f) heating unit.

【FEATURES】
(1)With different working model: manual, semi-automatic, automatic;
(2)Fast heating of die by inductive heating. Temperature control accuracy is ±1.0℃;
(3)Computer controlling of whole process, with cycle time less than 45 seconds;
(4)Compacted gas-pressurizing unit and high-pressure gas tank. Easy to use and daily maintain is simple.

3. Parameters of hot gas forming press (standard configuration)
 

 
 

4. Main achievements

High pressure source of compressed air has been developed. The gas volume is 200L for 35MPa high
pressure. Fast transfer of high-pressured gas and precision control of gas pressure are realized.
Servo-controlled hot gas forming press for mass production has been developed, which has been used for
the production of aluminum alloy tubular parts with complex cross-sections and magnesium alloy parts with
big expansion ratio and irregular sections. Six patents have been awarded. Up to now, three hot gas forming
presses have been transferred to Bicycle industry for mass production of aluminum alloy components which
were previously manufactured by hard-die mechanical forming. More than 1.1 million pieces have been
manufactured.
